Black Stars Blow: Thomas Partey Out for Opener

It’s a major setback for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup ambitions. The Black Stars will be without midfield engine Thomas Partey for their opening Group L fixture against Panama in Toronto, following the refusal of his visa application by Canadian authorities.

FIFA confirmed the news on Friday, reiterating that immigration decisions—including visa approvals for tournament participants—remain the sole responsibility of the host nation and fall outside the scope of football's governing body.

Why He’s Out

The 32-year-old, currently playing for La Liga side Villarreal, is currently facing multiple charges of rape and sexual assault in the United Kingdom. While Partey has pleaded not guilty to all allegations and remains on bail, Canadian immigration laws strictly regulate entry for individuals involved in ongoing criminal proceedings, which ultimately led to the rejection of his application.

Looking Ahead

While Partey is sidelined for the match at BMO Field on June 17, his tournament isn't over. He remains eligible to play in Ghana’s remaining group-stage matches, both of which are being hosted in the United States:

June 23: vs. England (Boston)

June 27: vs. Croatia (Philadelphia)

For now, all eyes will be on how head coach Carlos Queiroz adjusts his midfield for the high-stakes opener in Toronto without one of his most experienced leaders.
