Tournament Blow: Jurriën Timber Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup

The Netherlands have been dealt a significant pre-tournament setback, confirming that Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to an ongoing groin injury.

Despite an intensive push to return to fitness—which included a 54-minute appearance for Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30—the 24-year-old was ultimately deemed unable to participate in the upcoming tournament in a "medically responsible manner".

A Difficult Decision

Timber had been battling the injury since mid-March, following a Premier League match against Everton. Although he was initially named in Ronald Koeman’s squad, his recovery did not progress securely enough to withstand the physical demands of the World Cup schedule.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) released an official statement on Monday, June 8, announcing the decision:

The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team's pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We're with you, Jurrien.

Replacement Called Up

In response to the vacancy, head coach Ronald Koeman has acted swiftly to maintain the squad's defensive depth. Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up as Timber's official replacement. Geertruida, who provides versatility across the backline, will now join the Dutch squad as they prepare for their opening Group F fixture against Japan on June 14.

While the news is undoubtedly a disappointment for Timber, the extra recovery time may prove beneficial for his long-term fitness as he aims to return to peak condition for Arsenal ahead of the new club campaign.
