The "Zirkzee Operation": Roma and Man Utd Locked in Negotiations Over January Loan

The transfer tug-of-war for Joshua Zirkzee has intensified as AS Roma look to bring the Dutch forward back to Italy. On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, reports from both Italy and Manchester suggest that while the player has given his "green light" to the move, the two clubs remain deadlocked over the financial structure of the deal.

Zirkzee, who arrived at Old Trafford for £36.5 million in the summer of 2024, has struggled to find consistency in England, scoring just eight times in 60 appearances for the Red Devils.

The Current State of Play

Roma’s sporting director, Frederic Massara, has been in direct contact with Manchester United officials this week to propose a "traditional Italian compromise" to navigate FFP restrictions.

Roma’s Offer: An initial €5 million (£4.3m) loan fee for the remainder of the season, with an option to buy in June 2026 for approximately €30–35 million.

The "Obligation" Sticking Point: Manchester United are reportedly "playing hardball." Under Ruben Amorim, United would prefer a permanent sale or a loan that includes a mandatory obligation to buy, ensuring they recoup their initial investment. The Player’s Stance: Zirkzee has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Giallorossi. Conscious of the 2026 World Cup, he is desperate for regular minutes—something he hasn't seen under Amorim, who has handed him just three Premier League starts this season.

The "AFCON" Delay

While negotiations are "progressing well," a final announcement is unlikely before the second half of January.

Squad Depth: Manchester United are losing Bryan Mbeumo (Morocco) and Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Amorim’s Insurance: The United boss is unwilling to sanction Zirkzee’s departure until these players return or a replacement—widely rumored to be Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo—is officially signed.

Why Zirkzee for Roma?

For Roma, Zirkzee represents a "tactical revolution." Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini (who joined Roma earlier this year) views Zirkzee as

the perfect mobile striker to replace Evan Ferguson, whose loan from Brighton is set to be terminated in January following a disappointing goal return.

"Joshua knows the league, he knows the rhythm, and he has the 'special' quality to link our play," a Roma source reportedly stated.

The Verdict: Roma have the player's "yes" and a clear plan, but Manchester United hold all the cards. If United can secure Antoine Semenyo early in January, the door will likely swing open for Zirkzee to return to Italy.
