Not Manchester City’s Desire": Claudio Echeverri’s January Move to Girona Confirmed Against His Wishes

The City Football Group’s internal talent management is making headlines this week, but not for the usual reasons. On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, reports confirmed that Manchester City has finalized an agreement to send Argentine sensation Claudio "Diablito" Echeverri to Girona on a six-month loan—a move the player himself was reportedly desperate to avoid.

The 19-year-old playmaker, who has struggled for minutes during a disappointing loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen, will move to Spain on January 1st to help bolster Girona's squad as they fight to climb out of the La Liga relegation zone.

The "River Plate" Heartbreak

The controversy surrounding the move stems from Echeverri’s personal preference. Following the early termination of his loan in Germany, Echeverri and his representatives made it clear that his "priority" was a return to his native Argentina to re-join River Plate.

However, Manchester City officials have stood firm, insisting that the teenager's development must continue in a top European league.

"That's what Claudio wants, but it's not Manchester City's desire," Echeverri’s agent revealed in a blunt interview with Sport. "He would be delighted to return to Argentina, but now it will not be possible. City do not want to loan him to South America."

Why Girona? The CFG Strategy

For Manchester City, the move to Girona (a fellow City Football Group club) is purely tactical:

Guaranteed Minutes: Girona is currently 18th in La Liga and in desperate need of creative spark. Manager Míchel has reportedly promised Echeverri a "central role" in the team's survival battle.

Tactical Alignment: Girona plays a system similar to Pep Guardiola's City, ensuring Echeverri learns the "CFG principles" in a competitive environment.

The "Vitor Reis" Example: City has pointed to the success of young defender Vitor Reis, who has flourished at Girona this season, as proof that the Montilivi is the right place for a "wonderkid" to toughen up.

The Leverkusen Fallout

The decision to move Echeverri follows a bruising four months in the Bundesliga. Despite Xabi Alonso’s initial excitement, Echeverri managed only 11 appearances (3 starts) for Leverkusen, finding himself buried behind Florian Wirtz and Jonas Hofmann in the pecking order.

City’s sporting department reportedly felt the lack of "rhythm and continuity" was damaging Echeverri’s confidence and market value, leading to the "emergency" recall this week.

The Verdict: While Echeverri might be heading to Catalonia with a heavy heart, the move is a massive win for Girona. If "Diablito" can find his River Plate form in La Liga, he could be the difference between survival and relegation for the Spanish side.
