Bibiani Gold Stars’ debut in African inter-club football ended in disappointment as they suffered a crushing 5–0 defeat to Algerian giants JS Kabylie in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round clash on Sunday.
The result sealed a 7–0 aggregate elimination, bringing the Ghanaian side’s maiden continental campaign to an abrupt halt at the very first stage.
Gold Stars traveled to the 1 November 1954 Stadium needing to overturn a 2–0 deficit from the first leg in Accra. Instead of mounting a comeback, however, they were immediately overwhelmed by Kabylie’s high pressing and fluid passing. By halftime, the hosts were already two goals up, leaving the tie beyond reach.
The second half offered little respite for the Miners. Kabylie’s wide players consistently stretched the defense, while their midfield dominance produced wave after wave of attacks. Three more goals followed after the break, completing a one-sided rout that highlighted the gulf in experience and quality.
For Gold Stars, the occasion proved too great. They struggled to retain possession, created few chances, and were repeatedly undone by their lack of tactical discipline. While the scoreline was harsh,
their qualification for the preliminary round itself marked a historic achievement for the Bibiani-based side.
The experience, though painful, could prove invaluable as they return to focus on the Ghana Premier League.
For JS Kabylie, this was a statement performance. The Algerian heavyweights showcased their pedigree,
combining authority, efficiency, and composure to remind the continent that they remain a formidable force in African football.
