End of an Era: Robert Lewandowski Confirms FC Barcelona Departure

The rumors have officially become reality. In a bittersweet moment for the Blaugrana faithful, Robert Lewandowski announced on Saturday, May 16, 2026, that he will be leaving FC Barcelona at the end of the season when his contract officially expires on June 30.

The 37-year-old Polish icon took to social media to bid an emotional farewell to Catalonia, confirming that his highly decorated, four-year chapter with the club has reached its natural conclusion. He will play his final game at the Camp Nou this Sunday against Real Betis.

1. Why the Split? The Renewal Stand-Off

While both parties hold nothing but immense respect for one another, negotiations for a contract extension ultimately hit a roadblock over structure and role:

The Length Contract: Lewandowski reportedly desired a two-year extension to potentially see out his European career in Barcelona. However, the club’s sporting department was only willing to offer a rigid 1-year deal.

The Financial & Tactical Shift: The newly-crowned La Liga champions offered a renewal that included a significant wage reduction. Furthermore, with manager Hansi Flick increasingly utilizing the pace and youth of Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski was staring down the reality of a heavily reduced role.

The Clean Break: Rather than taking a backseat or straining the club’s strict wage bill, both player and club decided a free-agency exit was the most honorable path forward.

2. "Mission Completed" — In His Own Words

Taking to Instagram to deliver his official goodbye, Lewandowski was full of immense gratitude for the presidency, the staff, and the fans who embraced him from day one.

"After four years full of challenges and hard work, it's time to move on," Lewandowski wrote. "I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete. Four seasons, three championships... Catalonia is my place on earth. A special thank you to President Laporta for giving me the chance to live the most incredible chapter of my career. Barça is back where it belongs."

Hansi Flick, who shared a legendary history with the striker at both Bayern and Barça, also paid tribute during his pre-match press conference: "He spoke with the team and said goodbye. For me, it has been a privilege to work with him. He is a perfect role model for young players—he arrived as a star, he leaves as a legend."

3. Where Next? Saudi Arabia Beckons

While Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire made a heavy push with a reported $15 million-a-season offer, all arrows point toward the Middle East.

Reports indicate that Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal have submitted a mammoth, eye-watering two-year contract proposal worth roughly $45 million net per season. For a player turning 38 this August, it is an offer virtually impossible to refuse.
