The Enzo Fernandez Ultimatum: Chelsea Plan "Record-Destroying" Contract to Fend Off Real Madrid

The tug-of-war for the heart of Chelsea’s midfield has reached a boiling point. As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, reports are surfacing that Chelsea’s hierarchy is prepared to shatter their own wage structure to ensure Enzo Fernández remains the face of the project at Stamford Bridge.

Following a week of cryptic interviews and a crushing Champions League exit at the hands of PSG, the Blues are moving "forcefully" to end the speculation once and for all.

The "Record-Destroying" Offer

To combat growing interest from Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester City, Chelsea is reportedly preparing a contract that would make Enzo the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

The Salary: Sources suggest a weekly wage of roughly £400,000 (€460,000). This would move him past club captain Reece James (£250k) and Wesley Fofana (£200k) to the top of the earners' list.

The Policy Shift: This move marks a significant departure from the club's "incentivized" wage model, which typically keeps base salaries lower in favor of performance bonuses. For Enzo, the club appears ready to make an exception.

The Global Context: At £400k per week, Enzo would join the stratospheric tier of global earners, trailing only the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé in the European hierarchy.

"No Smoke Without Fire": The Exit Rumors

Why the sudden rush? The urgency stems from an interview Enzo gave to ESPN Argentina immediately following Chelsea's 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG on Tuesday night.

When asked if he would be at Stamford Bridge next season, the vice-captain gave a non-committal response:

"I don't know... there are eight games left and the FA Cup. Then there's the World Cup, and then we'll see."

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that while Enzo is "comfortable" in London, the lack of an agreed contract extension over the last few months has opened the door for elite clubs to "test the waters."

The Manager's View: Liam Rosenior Speaks

Despite the noise, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is adamant that his star midfielder isn't going anywhere. Speaking ahead of today’s clash with Everton, Rosenior revealed he held a long, private conversation with the Argentine.

"He made it really clear how happy he is here," Rosenior stated. "In translation and in emotions after a loss, things get misconstrued. He is fully committed to this group."
