Rodri Fined £80,000: The Cost of Questioning Referee Neutrality

The Football Association has officially handed down an £80,000 fine to Manchester City midfielder Rodri following his explosive post-match comments after City’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on February 1, 2026.

While the Spaniard escaped a match suspension, the heavy financial penalty and a formal warning serve as a stern reminder of the FA’s zero-tolerance policy regarding the integrity of match officials.

The Incident: A "Game of Two Halves"

The controversy stems from a high-stakes clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where City squandered a 2-0 half-time lead. The turning point was a highly disputed 53rd-minute goal by Dominic Solanke.

The Controversy: City players and staff were adamant that Solanke kicked through the back of defender Marc Guéhi’s leg to win the ball before scoring.

The VAR Decision: Despite a review, the goal was allowed to stand, sparking a momentum shift that allowed Spurs to claw back for a draw.

The "Astonishing" Rant

In a rare moment of public frustration, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner didn't hold back during his post-match interview with an Australian broadcaster:

"I know we won too much and the people don't want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral. It's not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated because the foul is so clear."

Rodri further alleged a pattern of bias, citing recent decisions in matches against Manchester United and Newcastle, stating, "It’s two, three games in a row and I don’t know why."

The FA Verdict & Apology

The FA charged Rodri under Rule E3.1, alleging his comments implied bias and questioned the integrity of referee Robert Jones.

In his defense, Rodri admitted the charge and issued a formal apology, clarifying that his "they don't want us to win" comment referred to rival fans and the general public, not a coordinated officiating conspiracy. The commission noted his clean disciplinary record but insisted the fine was necessary to protect the "impartiality" of the game.

Impact on the Title Race

With Manchester City currently trailing Arsenal by several points, avoiding a playing ban for Rodri is a massive relief for Pep Guardiola. However, the incident highlights the mounting pressure at the Etihad as the 2025/26 title race enters its final, most intense stage.
