The saga is over! On Monday, February 2, 2026, Dayot Upamecano officially put an end to months of speculation by agreeing to a massive new contract with
Bayern Munich. Despite an intense "poker game" involving some of Europe’s biggest clubs, the 27-year-old Frenchman has chosen to remain the cornerstone of
Vincent Kompany's defense.
The deal, which runs until June 2030, reportedly makes Upamecano one of the highest-paid defenders in the world, rewarding his transformation into an "indispensable
leader" since Kompany’s arrival.
The Contract Details: Numbers and Clauses
The negotiations were complex, involving a late-night ultimatum from Bayern’s board and a standoff over bonuses. Here is what the new agreement looks like:
Duration: A 4-year extension, keeping him at the Allianz Arena until 2030.
Salary: A significant bump to approximately €16m–€20m per year (including bonuses).
The "Lump Sum" Bonus: After a dispute over the structure of a €20m signing-on fee, a compromise was reached to secure his commitment.
The Exit Door: To appease his representatives, Bayern have reportedly included a €65m–€70m release clause that becomes active in the summer of 2027.
The "Informal" Rejection: Who Missed Out?
Upamecano’s camp has officially informed the chasing pack that the Frenchman is off the market. Before today's breakthrough, several giants were ready to pounce on a free transfer:
🇪🇸 Real Madrid: Viewed him as the ideal long-term successor to partner Antonio Rüdiger.
🏴 Liverpool: Had held talks with his agent, Moussa Sissoko, as they look for a top-tier defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk.
🏴 Chelsea & Tottenham: Both London clubs were monitoring the situation closely and were prepared to offer astronomical signing bonuses.
🇮🇹 Inter Milan: Held "exploratory talks" but were ultimately outmuscled by Bayern's financial package.
Max Eberl (Bayern Sporting Director): "Dayot is a world-class defender and a key pillar of our future. We are delighted he has shown this level of commitment to the
club. It’s a clear signal that the best players want to be at FC Bayern."
The Verdict: By securing Upamecano, Bayern have avoided a "Davies-style" saga and kept hold of a player who has become arguably the best ball-playing center-back in Europe this season. It's a huge victory for Max Eberl and the Bayern board.
