The Final Whistle: Divock Origi Announces Retirement from Professional Football

In an emotional announcement on June 8, 2026, Liverpool cult hero and Belgian forward Divock Origi confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.

Closing the chapter on a distinguished career that spanned 371 games and saw him score 70 goals across five clubs, Origi took to social media to share his gratitude with fans, coaches, and teammates. "My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled," he wrote in his announcement. "I lived out my childhood dreams to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies... The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling".

A Legacy Defined by Iconic Moments

Though he played for several clubs, including Lille, AC Milan, and Nottingham Forest (on loan), Origi is best remembered for his historic tenure at Liverpool. Joining the Reds in 2014, he became a symbol of resilience and "clutch" performances.

Champions League Heroics: He played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph. His two goals in the legendary 4-0 semi-final comeback against Barcelona remain one of the most famous sequences in the competition's history. He followed that by scoring the second goal in the 2-0 final victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

Derby Delight: Origi earned a permanent place in Anfield folklore for his performance against Everton. He scored six goals in the Merseyside derby, most notably a dramatic 96th-minute winner in 2018 that prompted Jurgen Klopp’s famous sprint onto the pitch.

Silverware Collection: During his time at Liverpool, he secured an impressive trophy haul, including the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Career Overview

Total Appearances: 371 matches across all competitions.

Total Goals: 70 career goals.

National Team: Origi earned 32 caps for Belgium, scoring three goals. He made his mark on the world stage at the 2014 World Cup, becoming the youngest Belgian player to score in the tournament at the time (19 years, 2 months, 3 days).

Transitioning to a New Chapter

After leaving Liverpool in 2022, Origi moved to AC Milan before spending the 2023-24 season on loan at Nottingham Forest. He had not made a competitive appearance since April 2024 and became a free agent in December 2025 after terminating his contract with Milan.

As he hangs up his boots, the football world remembers a player who possessed an uncanny ability to show up when it mattered most. While his playing days have come to an end, his legacy as a Liverpool icon and a man for the "big moments" is firmly cemented in the annals of football history.
