Tuchel Drops a Bombshell: Phil Foden "Not a Guarantee" for World Cup 🏟️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🧱

The "Road to 2026" just hit a massive speed bump for one of England's brightest stars. Following the 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley on Tuesday, March 31, England manager Thomas Tuchel has cast serious doubt over Phil Foden’s place in the final World Cup squad.

Despite his status as a Premier League superstar, Foden now faces a race against time to prove he belongs on the plane to North America this June.

The "False Nine" Failure: What Went Wrong?

Tuchel gave Foden every opportunity to stake his claim during the March international break, but the results were far from convincing:

The Audition: Foden was the only player to start both friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

The Roles: He operated as a traditional #10 in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay and was pushed into a "False Nine" role against Japan to cover for the injured Harry Kane.

The Verdict: In both systems, Foden struggled to find his rhythm, looking "ineffective" and failing to translate his Manchester City magic to the international stage.

"He tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch. It's not a guarantee that he will come." Thomas Tuchel

Why Foden is on the Edge

Tuchel’s comments highlight a "disconnect" that has plagued Foden's England career. While he remains a tactical genius at club level, the 25-year-old is facing intense competition from Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers for those creative attacking spots.

Tuchel has already shown he isn't afraid to cut big names—having left out Trent Alexander-Arnold for the March camp—and he’s made it clear that "reputation" won't buy a ticket to the World Cup.
