Lions of Teranga Rule Tangier: Sadio Mané Sinks Egypt to Reach AFCON Final

The "Sadio Mané vs. Mo Salah" rivalry wrote a new chapter on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, and once again, it was the Senegalese icon who emerged victorious. In a tense, tactical AFCON semi-final at the Grand Stade de Tanger, Senegal defeated Egypt 1–0 to secure their place in the final.

While Mo Salah made history earlier this week by reaching 100 international goal contributions, he was left frustrated by a disciplined Senegalese defense that allowed Egypt zero shots on target until the 84th minute.

Match Highlights: The Mané Moment

The game followed a familiar pattern for these two heavyweights: a cagey midfield battle defined by defensive resilience rather than attacking flair.

78’ | The Breakthrough: After dominating possession (65%) but struggling to break the deadlock, Senegal finally found the net.

Lamine Camara’s long-range strike took a fortuitous deflection, falling perfectly for Sadio Mané. The captain chested the ball down and rifled a low shot into the bottom left corner, leaving Mohamed El Shenawy with no chance.

The "Koulibaly" Blow: Despite the win, Senegal suffered a major setback. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly was substituted in the 23rd minute with an injury.

Having also picked up a yellow card earlier in the half—his second of the knockout stage—the skipper is now suspended and injured for the final.

Egypt’s Shutdown: Hossam Hassan’s side played for penalties from the opening whistle. The Pharaohs failed to record a single shot in the first half for the first time in 33 AFCON matches. Salah was kept quiet throughout, finishing the game with just 30 touches.

Who Stands in Their Way?

Senegal now await the winner of the second semi-final between Nigeria and hosts Morocco.

The Koulibaly Crisis: With Koulibaly and Habib Diarra (also suspended) out of the final, manager Pape Thiaw will have to rely on 20-year-old Mamadou Sarr to lead the defense in the biggest game of his life.

The "Triple Crown" Dream: Having won the title in 2022, Senegal are looking to become the first team to win two out of three consecutive AFCONs since Egypt's legendary hat-trick between 2006 and 2010.

The Verdict: Senegal were the only team that truly wanted to win this in 90 minutes. While Egypt's defensive discipline was admirable, their lack of ambition cost them a spot in a record-extending 10th final. For Mané, it's another victory over his former teammate; for Salah, the wait for an international trophy continues.
