Conor Gallagher has officially joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atlético Madrid!

The London Stadium and Stamford Bridge will be watching closely as a "boyhood Blue" turns Lilywhite. On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Tottenham Hotspur officially confirmed the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid in a deal worth approximately £34.7 million.

Gallagher returns to the Premier League after 18 months in Spain, signing a long-term contract (until 2031) as the first marquee arrival of the Thomas Frank era at Spurs.

The Details: Beating the Villans to the Punch

Spurs moved with lightning speed to secure the 25-year-old, essentially hijacking interest from Aston Villa following a disastrous injury blow to Rodrigo Bentancur last week.

The Fee: A package totaling nearly £35m (€40m).

The Competition: Aston Villa had reportedly proposed a loan-to-buy deal, but Spurs’ willingness to pay the full permanent fee immediately convinced Atlético Madrid to greenlight the move.

The Urgency: With Bentancur undergoing hamstring surgery and Pape Matar Sarr currently at AFCON with Senegal, Thomas Frank personally called Gallagher on Monday to convince him to spearhead the Spurs midfield.

Why Gallagher? The Tactical Fit

Thomas Frank was full of praise for his new #23 (expected shirt number), highlighting the specific traits Spurs have lacked during their recent winter slump.

Leadership: Gallagher famously captained Chelsea before his move to Spain; Frank noted he brings "maturity and character" to a dressing room currently sitting 14th in the table.

Engine Room: His "running power" is seen as the perfect foil for James Maddison, allowing the creative players more freedom while Gallagher

handles the high-pressing dirty work.

The World Cup Dream: Having been largely frozen out by Thomas Tuchel in the England setup recently, Gallagher views this move as his primary vehicle to secure a spot for the 2026 World Cup this summer.

"I Wanted to be a Spurs Player": Gallagher’s First Words

The former Chelsea academy graduate didn't shy away from the controversy of joining a rival club, expressing his hunger to get started immediately.

Conor Gallagher: "I'm so happy and excited. This happened very quickly, but it was an easy decision. I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. I know how great the fans are here, and I want to create special memories together."

The Verdict: This is a statement of intent from the Spurs board. By gazumping Aston Villa and securing a Premier League-proven engine, they have given Thomas Frank the tools to climb out of the bottom half of the table. For Gallagher, the pressure is on: he must turn from Chelsea icon to Spurs hero in the space of a weekend.
