🇹🇷 Turkish Delight? Galatasaray Intensify Lookman Talks Amid Atalanta Turmoil

The January transfer window is still weeks away, but the Turkish giants Galatasaray are already moving aggressively for one of Europe’s most mercurial wingers: Ademola Lookman (28).

Reports from both Italy and Turkey suggest that what started as tentative summer interest has now evolved into serious discussions, with Galatasaray sensing a major opportunity to exploit Lookman's fractured relationship with his current club, Atalanta. The reigning African Footballer of the Year looks set for a fresh start, and Istanbul appears to be his most likely destination.

The Breakdown in Bergamo

Lookman's status at Atalanta has been highly unstable since the summer.

After a sensational 2023/24 season, which included an unforgettable Europa League Final hat-trick, the Nigerian star pushed hard for a move.

Summer Saga: Lookman reportedly submitted a transfer request and briefly refused to train to force a move, with Inter Milan offering around €45 million—a bid Atalanta rejected, demanding closer to €60 million.

The Coaching Change: The situation was complicated further by his public touchline spat with former coach Ivan Juric (who has since been sacked). While new coach Raffaele Palladino may want to integrate Lookman,

the emotional scars on both sides remain deep.

Underperformance: Lookman's form has dipped sharply this season, scoring just 3 goals and 1 assist in 14 appearances, a significant drop from his previous output, making Atalanta potentially more open to negotiations.

Galatasaray's Bold Strategy

Galatasaray are capitalising on the unrest by preparing a structured, tempting offer that addresses both

Atalanta's high valuation and the player's financial demands.

The Loan-to-Buy Approach: To bypass Atalanta's high asking price (€55-60 million), Galatasaray are reportedly crafting a strategic offer involving a loan with an option or obligation to buy. This provides Atalanta with financial protection while allowing the Turkish side to defer the major investment.

The Nigerian Connection: The club reportedly plans to use their current star forward, Victor Osimhen,

to play a pivotal role in persuading his Super Eagles teammate to join the Turkish champions. The prospect of an all-Nigerian attack at the Rams Park is hugely appealing for the club and its fans.

A Massive Contract: Reports indicate Galatasaray are ready to offer Lookman a life-changing contract package worth up to €12 million (including bonuses), which would instantly make him one of

the highest earners in the Süper Lig, second only to Osimhen.

The Looming Competition

Despite the advanced talks, the deal is far from certain. The talent is undeniable, and European rivals are lurking, ready to hijack the move:

Premier League Interest: Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, and Aston Villa were all credited with interest over the summer and remain attentive to his situation.

Serie A/La Liga: Italian sides like Inter Milan and AS Roma, along with Spain's Atlético Madrid, are also reportedly monitoring the player.

With his contract running until June 2027, Atalanta still hold a strong negotiating position, but Lookman's clear desire for a fresh start makes a January transfer highly likely.

All eyes are on Istanbul as Galatasaray push for what would be a spectacular winter signing.
