Southampton are in advanced talks to re-sign former midfielder Oriol Romeu on a free transfer.
The 34-year-old is a free agent after terminating his contract with Barcelona in September.
Romeu, who played for Southampton from 2015 to 2022, is reportedly scheduled for a medical and is expected to sign a short-term contract until the end of the 2025–26 season, with an option to extend for another year.
Key details of the transfer:
Context: The move comes shortly after Southampton, who sit 21st in the Championship, sacked manager Will Still.
The club hopes Romeu's experience will help stabilize the team and add leadership to a youthful squad.
Previous history: Romeu made over 250 appearances for Southampton during his previous seven seasons with the club. After leaving in 2022 for Girona, he later joined Barcelona before being released.
Transfer status: Fabrizio Romano and The Daily Echo report that a deal has been agreed in principle, pending a medical.
