The Butcher is back: Lisandro Martínez returns to full training with Manchester United

In a massive boost for Manchester United and their new coach Rubén Amorim, defender Lisandro Martínez has returned to full training with the first-team squad at Carrington. This move marks a significant step in his recovery after being sidelined for more than eight months with a serious knee injury.

The long road to recovery

The initial blow: The 27-year-old Argentine suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during United's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in February 2025.

A difficult setback: Earlier this month, his return was delayed by a minor setback, which saw him continue to work individually for longer than expected.

Progressing at pace: Martínez had been working hard in his rehabilitation for months, including outdoor training and individual sessions, before finally being given the green light to rejoin his teammates.

What his return means for United

The return of the fan-favorite centre-back, nicknamed "The Butcher" for his aggressive and tenacious defensive style, is a huge lift for the team's morale and defensive stability. His on-ball quality and leadership from the back have been sorely missed.

While Saturday's Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest will come too soon, there is hope he could be involved in the matchday squad for the game against Tottenham the following weekend, before the November international break. Manager Rubén Amorim has also confirmed that he will not rush the player back into action.

An unfortunate injury history

Unfortunately, this is not Martínez's first major injury setback at United. He has been plagued by injury problems since joining in July 2022, and has missed more games through injury than he has played for the club.

However, this latest milestone is a testament to his determination to return to the highest level, and his comeback will be a welcome sight for the entire Manchester United fanbase.
