A new Lion emerges: Nico O'Reilly joins England squad as James faces injury setback

The news came as a bittersweet moment for England fans on Monday, October 6, 2025. While Chelsea captain Reece James was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury, a promising young talent from Manchester City, Nico O'Reilly, received his first senior international call-up.

James's Recurring Injury Woes

Reece James sustained an injury during Chelsea's 2-1 Premier League victory over Liverpool on Saturday. This latest setback will undoubtedly be a blow for both the player and Chelsea, who are facing a number of injuries to key players, according to the London Evening Standard.

James has been unfortunate with injuries throughout his career, limiting his appearances for England despite making his debut in 2020.

O'Reilly's Rapid Rise

O'Reilly, a 20-year-old defender who can also operate in midfield, has been rewarded for his impressive form with Manchester City.

Having previously represented England at various youth levels from Under-15s to Under-21s, this promotion marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. He recently signed a new five-year contract with his boyhood club, Manchester City.

His call-up comes at a time when England boss Thomas Tuchel is facing a shortage of fit full-backs,

with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tino Livramento also sidelined. While O'Reilly typically plays as a left-back for City,

he is expected to provide cover on the right side of defense, where James would have featured.

As Yahoo Sports notes, Djed Spence and Myles Lewis-Skelly are the only other specialist full-backs in the squad.

Upcoming Fixtures and Potential Debut

England will host Wales in a friendly match on Thursday, October 9, 2025, before travelling to Riga to face Latvia in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. These fixtures present a golden opportunity for O'Reilly to make his senior England debut and showcase his talents on the international stage.

Impact on the Squad

O'Reilly's inclusion adds depth and versatility to the England squad, particularly in the defensive positions.

His ability to play in multiple roles could prove invaluable as England navigate the upcoming fixtures.

This call-up also highlights England manager Gareth Southgate's willingness to give opportunities to young, in-form players who are performing well at the club level.
