James has been unfortunate with injuries throughout his career, limiting his appearances for England despite making his debut in 2020.

O'Reilly, a 20-year-old defender who can also operate in midfield, has been rewarded for his impressive form with Manchester City. 

Having previously represented England at various youth levels from Under-15s to Under-21s, this promotion marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. He recently signed a new five-year contract with his boyhood club, Manchester City.

His call-up comes at a time when England boss Thomas Tuchel is facing a shortage of fit full-backs, 

with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tino Livramento also sidelined. While O'Reilly typically plays as a left-back for City, 

he is expected to provide cover on the right side of defense, where James would have featured. 

As Yahoo Sports notes, Djed Spence and Myles Lewis-Skelly are the only other specialist full-backs in the squad.
