A Gesture Beyond Football
In one of the most touching moments in recent football history, Chelsea players have donated part of their Club World Cup
bonuses to the family of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in July 2025.
The football world was left in shock when Jota and his brother, André Silva, lost their lives in a fatal car accident in northwestern Spain.
The 28-year-old forward had only just married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso,
11 days earlier and left behind three children, the youngest just seven months old at the time.
This heartbreaking loss united the football community, with Chelsea’s gesture standing out as a symbol of solidarity.
Chelsea’s Emotional Tribute
Chelsea, under the management of Enzo Maresca, won the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup last month after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in a thrilling final.
The victory secured the club $114.6 million in prize money, with $15.5 million allocated to be shared among players as bonuses.
However, the Blues decided to do something extraordinary: each Chelsea player agreed to contribute around \$500,000 of their bonus to Jota’s family.
Why this matters:
It shows how footballers are capable of putting humanity above rivalry.
It highlights the deep connections players share, even across clubs.
It sends a message of unity in grief and respect for Jota’s legacy.
The Emotional Connection
One of the most affected Chelsea players was Pedro Neto, Jota’s close friend and Portugal teammate.
Neto had shared the pitch with Jota in the UEFA Nations League, which they had won together just days before the accident.
During Chelsea’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras, Neto tearfully held Jota’s shirt, with Enzo Fernández consoling him before kickoff.
The image of Neto honoring his fallen friend resonated with fans worldwide.
Liverpool’s Own Tribute
Liverpool also honored their former star in moving ways:
The club retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt across all levels.
Teammates, led by Virgil van Dijk, pledged support to Jota’s widow, Rute, and their children.
Fans flooded Anfield with tributes, scarves, and flowers, paying their respects.
Cardoso has since visited Anfield to witness the emotional memorials, reinforcing just how beloved Jota was.
Football Is More Than a Game
The story of Chelsea players giving up part of their hard-earned bonuses is a reminder that football is more than just trophies, rivalries, and money.
At its core, football is about family, respect, and community.
Diogo Jota may no longer be with us, but his legacy will live on—not only through Liverpool’s
tribute and Chelsea’s generosity but also through the love of millions of fans across the world.
