Following a disappointing 2024/25 season, Manchester United have confirmed the
departure of 10 players as new manager Ruben Amorim begins reshaping the squad.
The Red Devils endured one of their worst league finishes in decades, ending the
season in **15th place with just 42 points and missing out on European football
after losing the **Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite the poor results, the club’s hierarchy is backing Amorim and has already
kicked off a summer rebuild, starting with the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from
Wolves, with several more signings expected.
Premier League Release List Deadline
As per Premier League regulations, clubs were required to publish their retained and
released player lists following the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign. While some
names may still negotiate new contracts — as in the case of Arsenal’s Thomas Partey
the list provides insight into major changes happening at each club.
Who Did Manchester United Release?
Manchester United have released 10 players, including three senior team members who
featured regularly under Amorim and his predecessor, Erik ten Hag:
➤Christian Eriksen.
The Danish midfielder scored in United’s final match of the season against
Aston Villa. Eriksen's return to football after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020
was one of football’s great comeback stories. He joined United from Brentford but
now leaves as a free agent.
➤Jonny Evans.
The veteran defender departs following a long career with the Red Devils, having
won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League across two spells
at the club. He has also announced his **retirement from international football.
➤ Victor Lindelöf.
After eight years at Old Trafford since arriving from Benfica, Lindelöf exits the
club. The Swedish defender saw his game time reduced under Amorim.
Released Youth & Reserve Players:
➤ Hubert Graczyk
➤ Jack Kingdon
➤ Sam Murray
➤ Tom Myles
➤ James Nolan
➤ Tom Wooster
➤Tom Heaton
While veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is included on the released list, Manchester United have offered him a new contract, and talks are ongoing.
Who Else Might Leave This Summer?
Amorim’s rebuild may see several more departures. Notable players returning from
loan spells are expected to move again:
➤Marcus Rashford** (returned from Aston Villa)
➤Jadon Sancho** (returned from Chelsea)
➤Antony** (loan at Real Betis, linked with Bayer Leverkusen under ten Hag)
➤Alejandro Garnacho**, who has reportedly been told by Amorim to seek a new club
Manchester United’s Transfer Plans
United have already brought in Matheus Cunha to strengthen the forward line,
especially after inconsistent seasons from Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
The club is also heavily linked with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who is rumored to
be prioritizing a move to Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes Rejects Saudi Move
In a rare positive development, club captain Bruno Fernandes turned down a massive
offer from Saudi giants Al-Hilal. The Portuguese midfielder reportedly rejected a
huge salary to stay at Manchester United — a clear sign of his commitment despite
the club's struggles.
Fernandes remains one of the few bright spots in United’s gloomy campaign, and
Amorim will hope to build the new team around his leadership and creativity.
Manchester United’s squad is undergoing a significant overhaul under Ruben Amorim.
With ten players already released and more expected to follow, fans can expect a
busy transfer window at Old Trafford. The pressure is on Amorim to turn things
around — and fast.
